    • ]]>     http://nv-ssa.org/industry-news/feed 0     Legislative Updates http://nv-ssa.org/legislative-updates http://nv-ssa.org/legislative-updates#comments Thu, 03 Mar 2011 22:20:16 +0000 admin http://rubyringtech.com/staging/nv-ssa.org/?p=1 The Nevada Self Storage Association has been working hard in 2011 to change and update the lien laws for the state.  After a long process, with the help of our lobbyist, the SSA, the Board of Directors, and our membership, Senate Bill 150 was signed by Governor Brian Sandoval on June 13, 2011.  While we were not successful in effecting all of the changes that we initially hoped for and a few compromises were required along the way, we feel that what we did accomplish will help and further protect all self storage operators in Nevada going forward

     

    SB150 will go into effect on October 1, 2011.  When is does, ALL operators in Nevada will be required to make some changes to their existing lease to be in compliance with the new law.  On September 8, 2011 at 5:45pm and Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, the NVSSA will be holding a seminar that will explain all of the changes that have been made.  There will also be another seminar in Reno in November to go over the same information, date and time to be determined.

     

    At the Las Vegas meeting, the NVSSA will be unveiling a new lease form that will meet all of the requirements of the new laws.  This lease, created by Carlos Kaslow of the SSA’s Self Storage Legal Network, will be available for purchase in both paper and electronic formats.  Our lease will be reviewed and updated annually to make sure it is up to date with the latest industry trends.  This is the best way to ensure that you are in compliance with the new laws and that your lease stays current going forward.

     

    Below are the new changes that were implemented on October 1, 2011:

    As you can see, there were a lot of changes that had to be made to update a law that was over 28 years old.  We had to compromise with the legislators regarding the email notification requirements in order to get the bill passed or we would have gotten nothing through.  As with anything new, this will create a lot of questions for the owner operators of Nevada.  We encourage you to attend the seminar in Las Vegas on September 8.  We will be able to answer all of your questions and some you may not have thought of at that time.  If you have questions in the meantime, you can contact Travis Morrow, NVSSA President, at (520) 577-9777 x 223 or via email at tmorrow@nationalselfstorage.com.
